SM05: Security Management Nirvana: Strategic Risk Management
Room: 206 ~ 4:00PM - 5:00PM (Tuesday, March 23, 2010)
Public and private organizations are rapidly deploying physical software to increase asset protection, and improve safety and security. By coupling these efforts with their traditional IT security information management (SIM) solutions, they have the potential to become a significant new security asset for broad-based pro-active threat detection and response. Rather than looking at the problem as either a security or technology issue, some leading organizations are doing top down risk assessments to set priorities and identify areas where teaming between the traditional physical and IT security groups can lower overall costs while increasing protection and safety. But how can these organizations optimize the implementation of these systems to reduce risk and enhance overall security management? How are risks identified and prioritized so the most critical are addressed first? And how can costs be reduced and existing security devices leveraged? This discussion featuring industry experts will focus on strategic risk management, including the "where, what and how" for organizations.

The Antwerp Diamond Center was one of the most secure buildings in the world. With hundreds of millions of dollars worth of diamonds stored in its subterranean vault, it had to be. But on February 15, 2003, a band of skilled Italian thieves subverted every one of the Diamond Center's defenses and made off with a nearly half a billion dollars in diamonds, cash and other valuables. Join Scott Selby and Greg Campbell, authors of Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History, as they guide us through the Antwerp Diamond Heist of 2003. They'll show us step by step how thieves encountered each successive layer of security and figured out a way to beat it. Such security included a specially secured zone around the building, locked down entrances with metal barriers, a CCTV system, guards, light sensors, heat sensors, vibration detectors, motion detectors; a LIPS brand vault door strong enough to withstand explosions, a combination dial on the vault door, and more. It is a fascinating story that will be sure to inform and entertain!

DI02: Security as a Service: The Next Wave of Integrated IP-based Monitoring
Room: 204 ~ 11:30AM - 12:30PM (Wednesday, March 24, 2010)
Increased bandwidth, better compression and hosted security systems are making Security as a Service (SaaS) a reality, alleviating the customer's task of software maintenance, ongoing operation, and support. SaaS services include alarm, camera, and condition monitoring, with the recording and monitoring hardware for the services hosted at the central station or a third party provider. Minimal investment and services tailored to special needs of virtually any user make remote video monitoring a necessary investment for a wide range of resellers. This panel of experts will explain how IP-based monitoring solutions are effectively used in providing SaaS, outline the benefits of this new model, and give real-life examples of its usage.

The deployment of biometric technologies for both physical and logical access control is increasing over a wide array of industries as organizations and individuals look to increase security through enhanced identification technologies. A recent SIA study, "U.S Security Market Survey" states that biometrics will be the fastest-growing physical access technology in the next couple of years. At the same time, logical biometric access control is becoming increasingly important as cyber-security assumes an ever higher profile. This presentation will provide security professionals contemplating the incorporation of biometrics into their physical and/or logical access control systems, with a solid grasp of the issues that need to be resolved before such a system can be successfully designed and deployed.

EU03: Designing Video Surveillance Systems that Catch the Bad Guys
Room: 206 ~ 2:45PM - 4:45PM (Wednesday, March 24, 2010)
Most video systems today do not effectively catch bad guys because the resultant images are blurry and/or blochy. As a result, too many customers are not satisfied with their investment, and they blame the integrator who blames the consultant who blames the manufacturer. Meanwhile, the bad guy keeps getting away. The reality is poor system performance and image quality is more often due to a lack of early and consistent communication between the end-user, integrator, and specifier, as opposed to technology failure. By using simple descriptive terminology and basic video standards that end-users, architects, and integrators can easily understand, we will develop a series of guidelines that will substantially improve system design and installation to more effectively satisfy end user requirements and budget.

Retail Theft has become a significant issue that's impacted not only retail merchants, but also consumers that pick up the tab for this $40 billion per year problem. Organized Retail Crime (ORC), has also been linked as a funding source for terrorist activities, and commonly involves violent offenders who have turned to retail theft and fraud. Sixty percent of retailers with annual revenue greater than $5 billion rate organized retail crime (ORC) as a top-three business challenge (RILA). The role of retail loss prevention staff is also changing, as they become more of a strategic business partner, in addition to their traditional roles of detecting, deterring, and apprehending external and internal theft suspects. This panel will bring together industry and law enforcement experts who will provide insight into how technology, best practices, and partnerships can impact this growing problem.

IT02: Wireless Network Topologies from the Traditional Point-to-Multipoint Networks to the State-of-the-Art Mesh Architecture
Room: 302 ~ 2:45PM - 3:45PM (Wednesday, March 24, 2010)
Wireless networks can be designed with mainly three different topologies: point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and mesh. All the aforementioned topologies have advantages depending on the specific application and site we are working on. Lately wireless networks based on the mesh topology have gained a lot of traction in security and CCTV applications because of the absence of any single point of failure, and because of their intrinsic reliability and redundancy. On the other hand, point to point links, and point to multipoint networks are still very common in smaller applications, or in sites where we are unable to create multiple wireless paths for data and video streams.

He'll also examine branch and campus deployment models using network segmentation techniques such as VLANS, VrF lite, Layer-2 MPLS and IPSec encryption of IPVS traffic. Additionally he'll review how network services such as Power over Ethernet (PoE), Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), Network Time Protocol (NTP), syslog and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) are fundamental requirements for IPVS.
